Minutes of the Advisory Panel meeting at IDS'2000

The meeting of Advisory Panel (AP) took place on Wednesday, 30th August 2000 during IDS'2000 at Leeuwenhorst Congress Center, Noordwijkerhout, The Netherlands. Of all 36 members of AP at the time of the meeting 31 were present, 1 was excused (Kapseu), 1 sent substitute (Pan) and 3 were absent (Pikus, Puiggali, Sokhansanj).

Proceedings of the meeting included the following items:

  1. Welcome
  2. Information from IDS'2000 organisers
  3. Updating the list of AP members
  4. Information from IDS'2002 organisers
  5. Information from the IDS AP Secretariat
  6. Free discussion
  7. Presentation of proposal for hosting IDS'2006
  8. Elections of the AP Secretary
  9. Official photo of the AP

Proceedings of the meeting included the following items:

1. Welcome

The meeting was chaired by Prof. A.S. Mujumdar (AP Chairman) and Prof. Z. Pakowski (AP Secretary) who welcomed the participants.

2. Information from IDS'2000 organisers

Speakers: J. Coumans, Chairman of the Organising Committee of IDS'2000 and P. Kerkhof, Chairman of the Scientific Committee.
Statistics:
Submitted abstracts: 413 (16 rejected 16)
Submitted papers: 335 (15 rejected, 28 withdrawn)
Presented papers: 301 (10 keynotes, 84 scientific, 88 professional, 119 communications)
Registrants: 400 (48 countries)

It was the largest IDS'2000 ever held! The numbers for the former largest IDS'98 were 430, 400, 280, 302 (54 countries) respectively.

The detailed printed report was distributed among members of the AP. Since oral presentation of the report took most of the time for discussion there was not enough time to discuss in detail the new ideas in IDS'2000 organisation like Scientific Committee, 5 min oral + poster formula for all presentations except keynote, no printed proceedings - only CD ROM. Further discussion by e-mail via the Secretariat is encouraged.

3. Updating the list of AP members

The following changes were accepted:
Dr. I. Pikus and J-R. Puiggali are no longer members of the AP. Prof. M. Nakamura will replace Prof. M. Hasatani.
New members (in order of submission):

Prof. A.M. Sereno, Portugal
Prof. Sereno works at the Department of Chemical Engineering, University of Porto. His main area of expertise is drying of food and agricultural products. He has co-ordinated numerous research programmes on the subject.
Assoc. Prof. T.A.G. Langrish, Australia
Prof. Langrish works at the Department of Chemical Engineering, University of Sydney. He has a significant experience in simulation and experimental validation of drying of timber and spray drying of milk. He has recently co-authored a research text on drying timber. He has been awarded for best paper at IDS'90 and by Institution of Professional Engineers of New Zealand in 1993.
Prof. P. Perre, France
Prof. Perre works at ENGREF, France. He has published extensively on numerical simulation of internal mass and heat transfer in wood during drying. He has been awarded for the best paper published in Drying Technology at IDS'96.

During voting procedure for new members a suggestion was made to accept only these candidates, who beside their achievements in drying were also present at minimum 2 of the latest IDS. This suggestion was accepted and will be effective from IDS2002. We will also require a short CV of the candidate before elections.

4. Information from IDS'2002 organisers

Speaker: Prof. C. W. Cao - Chairman of the IDS'2002 Organising Committee.
Preparations for IDS'2002 are already in progress. First announcement was distributed to IDS'2000 participants. No details about exact location of IDS2002 in Beijin, China were available at the moment.

5. Information from the IDS AP Secretariat

Speaker: Prof. Z. Pakowski - acting Secretary of the AP.
During 98-2000 period the Secretariat established a permanent IDS AP website at http://chemeng.p.lodz.pl/idsap/ where basic information on the activities of the AP is available. Besides a database of list of contents of the following publications on drying was made available:

  • all IDS proceedings (20 volumes) and DRYING volumes (8 volumes)
  • all Advances in Drying (5 volumes)
  • all Drying Technology issues (89 issues).

The Secretariat now suggests compiling a database of websites related to drying (drying manufacturers, consultants etc.). Each AP member is kindly asked to submit by the end of November 2000 a list of websites in his/her own country according to an example distributed during the meeting (see also the beginnings of the catalogue at this website). The list should contain dryer type (or service type), country, language and site address in MS WORD table format.

6. Free discussion

The discussion time was severely limited. Among suggestions that came out later one is worth considering: the next meeting should not be organised as "a working lunch". Instead we should gather in the evening after early dinner and stay as long as necessary.

Another suggestion is that because a discussion in a body composed of 36 persons is difficult to organise the following actions should be taken:

  • form an executive body composed of 5-10 persons that will meet earlier or in between the IDSs to discuss major issues for the next meeting,
  • ask people wanting to speak to inform the Secretariat about the subject of their speech earlier.

Please, share your thought on this by e-mail.

7. Presentation of proposal for hosting IDS'2006

Two proposals were made verbally to organise IDS'2006: Norway and Hungary. During discussion a subject was raised that IDS should not perhaps return to Europe but instead penetrate regions where drying research is less active to promote its development. Since further proposals were not ready at the moment the Secretariat is waiting until the end of November (tentatively) for submission of the official proposals. After that date a ballot list will be made and members will be asked to vote by e-mail.

8. Elections of the AP Secretary

A. Mujumdar presented Z. Pakowski as a candidate for the next term. No other candidate was proposed. AP elected Z. Pakowski for the AP Secretary for 2000-2002 term.

9. Official photo of the AP

For the first time a photo was taken of the acting AP. Unfortunately, because of photographer's late arrival nine of our colleagues who chaired sessions had to leave and are not in the photo. The photo is available at the AP website.
