ABSTRACT

In order to increase the productivity of the paper machine by improved quality control it is of great importance to know the course of the drying process. A dynamic simulation program for drying of paper in a multi-cylinder dryer was therefore developed. The program calculates moisture and temperature profiles for the dynamic behaviour of a paper machine. The new model used for the program uses PDE's for temperature, moisture ratio and vapour content in the paper in order to describe the property profiles through the machine. Constant total pressure is assumed in the thickness direction but not, as in previous works a constant moisture profile.
SIMULINK was chosen as the tool to build up the block-oriented program. The program is window based with the interface created with MATLAB GUI. The model was evaluated with experimental data for the average moisture ratio.
As the program is made block-oriented it is also possible to add for instance the press section or models for the cross-machine direction independently.
