ON THE PREDICTABILITY OF SILO RAIN: MODELLING MOISTURE MIGRATION IN BEDS OF PARTICULATES AFTER DRYINGMatthias Schneider and Evangelos TsotsasThermal Process Engineering, Otto-von-Guericke-University, Universitätsplatz 2, 39104 Magdeburg, Germany E-Mail: matthias.schneider@vst.uni-magdeburg.de Keywords: storage, drying, moisture migration, product quality, packed bed ABSTRACT The occurrence of moisture migration in silos ("silo rain") is discussed, addressing its phenomenology, interpretation and calculation. A frame for the description of the complex, dynamic process is outlined. Laboratory scale measurements and estimates of kinetic constants (relaxation times) as well as a one-dimensional model incorporating interparticle diffusion kinetics, sorption equilibrium and heat transport kinetics within the packed bed are presented and compared with experimental results.
