ABSTRACT

The occurrence of moisture migration in silos ("silo rain") is discussed, addressing its phenomenology, interpretation and calculation. A frame for the description of the complex, dynamic process is outlined. Laboratory scale measurements and estimates of kinetic constants (relaxation times) as well as a one-dimensional model incorporating interparticle diffusion kinetics, sorption equilibrium and heat transport kinetics within the packed bed are presented and compared with experimental results.
